What is a Convenient Move? – Improve Your Chess Rating #5

Featured is a 15+10 rapid game I played against an opponent rated 1389. The opening is a Ruy Lopez, Classical variation with 3…Bc5. After 6 moves there are 2 imbalances present, a structural and minor piece one. By move 9 the position required black to find a convenient defense to a sensitive point on the queenside. What is a convenient move? The idea with this type of video is to simply help chess players improve their understanding of the game by sharing my train of thought while I play one rapid time control game. Accompanying my train of thought is a mini blackboard where I list some helpful notes throughout. The “Improve Your Chess Rating” playlist is a work in progress and is meant to compliment the “Beginner to Chess Master” playlist which is primarily theoretical knowledge. The videos in “Improve Your Chess Rating” are not uploaded by order of ratings.

Improve Your Chess Rating:

Beginner to Chess Master:

I’m a self-taught National Master in chess out of Pennsylvania, USA who was introduced to the game by my father in 1988 at the age of 8. The purpose of this channel is to share my knowledge of chess to help others improve their game. I enjoy continuing to improve my understanding of this great game, albeit slowly. 1. I love Jerry too. Every since I heard "Pigs on the 7th!" over a decade ago, he won my heart. Still hitting us w/ the quality regularly.

  2. I just lost 4 games in a row. Let's hope this helps.

  3. Another instructive game brother , thank you

  4. I love your videos/playstyle/voice/everything…Hope you get more views, atleast im doing my part, liking your vids:3

  5. Appreciate his calm demeanor. I am a new player and wired when playing. Also I don't know if I can regulate how pieces move in lichess but they ZOOM in at a fast pace and it's nerve racking. Anyone know if I can slow down the pace of pieces when they move? Thanks so much

  6. I dislike your new flag emblem on your thumbnails so much I am unsubscribing ……

  7. I'm thankful for your uploads. Thanks and take care!

  8. Love how these people get the chance to play against a high rated player and they dont even take a second to think about theyr moves

  9. Thanks Jerry! I'm really enjoying the Improve Your Chess Rating series

  10. I really like the video. I just felt a bit dissapointed by the oponent. Maybe he is too weak. However, nice analysis and it's good to see how to think

  11. Another game where your opponent ends the game with more time than they started with… Lol

  12. I like 4. c3 in this variation because there's a serious chance opponents might play 4…d6?? and lose the game instantly!

  13. I am surprised 4.c3 is not an instant reply, I face this a lot in my club and I assumed it's theory.

  14. Just move bro, we don’t need to know every possible outcome bro……Thanks

  15. Low elo and finishing with more time than you started with, sad!

  16. It's such a shame the opponent played so stupidly fast. It ALWAYS comes back and bites you. Again, you have 15 MINUTES, not even counting increment! Use them or don't play 15|10.

  17. I don’t meditate anymore when I want to relax. I watch your games. 😊
It certainly doesn’t go well when I try your strategy and play all bad moves in my head before playing the best move, but I run out of time. Time is an issue on the chess board and in life as well.

  18. opponent had more time than they started with. I don't know why people play this way

  19. I was dissapointed you didn't allow him the takeback

  20. What amazes me, even at this good level, is how much your opponent's Inthis series rush. This person ends with 15 minutes still on their clock! I know you are thinking allowed and explaining your thoughts (which is an incredible skill to do so well btw!) But you think much more deeply about your moves. Something I am trying to do more having watched you.
Moving too fast is my biggest weakness!

  21. Very informative Jerry, good notes too. Thanks

  22. Instead of queen C6+ why not rook C1 threatening rook x C7?

  23. You have exceptional teaching skills. It was very easy to follow and you make your thoughts clear. I look forward to more of these videos in the future!

  24. I’m a 1800 player and maybe I am wrong but I think that being ahead in “time” at position of 10:08 you should just play Rd1 threatening the queen with the following idea of Nc3 and then the second rook get into the game. The position is yet to open more and this could be to your advantage only.

  25. Jerry is great at communicating his thinking of each game.

  26. You cannot teach anything that takes natural talent to reach the master status. It's nice yes to see the masters. But "masters classes" popping up on you tube are a waste. Not everyone can be great. We do need janitors

  27. wow i just discovered your channel, your thinking is super relatable

  28. 14:04 what he failed to see is O-O-O not only defends c7 and activated the rook on the d-file but Rxa6 is impossible because of white’s back rank issue. After whites move Black has Kb7 defending both weak pawns!

  29. You steamrolled this guy but the video was still very instructive!

  30. Really liked the long form rapid sleep videos Jerry. Would really appreciate a new one when you get a chance. Subbed!

  31. Amazing explanation!I like the way you take al the time needed to calculate. That's one of the most important things I also need to improve!
    Thank you very much.
