Magnus Carlsen’s first chess game ever played under tournament conditions was at the Norwegian Chess Championship (under 11 division) in 1999. He scored at impressive 6/11 points. Over the next year and a half, rating shot up dramatically as he continued to compete. Here we will look at three of his games which document his early and dramatic improvement.
