  1. Alekhine in his day, was the God of chess, indisputably, no question. That was up until the middle 1930's at least. There's simply no comparison to his domination in chess, in any point in chess history, from the mid 1920's onwards. Well that is, until the days of Kasparov! Tal's genius still gets my vote though. And Botvinnik was indescribably good too, but could just be pipped sometimes, by the likes of Keres and Boleslavsky and Levenfisch . Reuben Fine did very well in 1938 too.

  2. How could these two guys not know instantly that Bronstein played Botvinnik in 1951 ? The last game was a draw, not a loss. Same things happened to Keres, forced to lose. Botvinnik complained greatly against these actions so much so he may have got into trouble himself, he was a hero of chess.

  3. Surely Bronstein was the joint World champion and best player in 1951. And Reshevsky was the strongest player in the world mid 1950's.

  4. Capablanca was a legend. But also serious deficiencies in his play. He didn't often face serious opposition, like russian chess players. Capablanca was maybe the best in just the early 1920's, a real star at that time. Then Alekhine took over.

  5. An unusual bias and lack of discernment in this video, bias against complex and dynamic involved combinational chess, that only the very best players COULD play, both in attack and defence.

  6. Max Euwe was probably great and lucky, exactly as Hikaru says.

  7. Reuben Fine was Euwe's second! in the world championship! He won the US Open or similar, etc many times. He was a top 10 player in the 1930's no doubt. Theorist sounds reasonable, slightly underated him I think. Chess moved so fast at that time. In 1938 he was top class indeed, maybe the best even. It would've been very close, very little separated these players at that exact point.

  8. Pillsbury was not such a great player, maybe determined, but not very original. He did become very very ill. Witnessed by Mieses I believe.

  9. Bobby Fischer: a god of chess and definitely doesn’t want you to learn anything else about him😂

  10. Smart to please the massive Indian audience. Anand is not even top five in the GOAT list

  11. You guys suck at naming the tiers. Then you struggle throughout the process 😀

  12. Lasker and resigned title before caps played against him

  13. There is only one god of chess. The most recent champion who has successfully defended his title at least 2 times. Magnus is the god, but he is getting old. If he defends successfully one more time, he will be the GOAT in nearly everyone's book.

  14. If you get #1 ranking you should be Legend. Minimum.

  15. 30:30 Fisher was the one who came up with clocks that have an increment, not Bronstein. The variant is also called Fisher Random, not Chess 960. Despite Fisher's feelings outside of chess, burying his accomplishments and attributing them to other people is quite petty.

  16. Indians see Anand on thumbnail : hikaru’s computer 💻: you just gained 1 billion subscribers

  17. Only in these recent years I got to know so much about professional chess and about so many brilliant players around the world, since my childhood only knew one name vishy anand (by reading about him in gk books i think other Indians can relate to me), and then after a few years heard the name of magnus Carlsen when he defeated anand.

  18. Vishwanath Anand in India not just a name its a legacy in India

  19. Its crazy to me how Hikarus mind works. Levy: the Tiers are messed up, Hikaru: let me give you a history lesson how WW1 started.

  20. 23:00 it might take years for players to get the notation. It isn't like there was an innertubes back then.

  21. I can't listen to Hikaru here.

He repeats himself a million times and never gets to the point it's so hard to listen to.

  22. Where is GM Supi that smoked magnito and hikaru?

  23. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: (Acts 17:30)
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. (James 4:4)
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (Matthew 7:13-14)

  24. 4:30 LOLOLOL Levy.. dude. You need to go on chessgames and look at all the great players profiles. How could you not know what Alekhine looks like! lol You're embarrassing Hikaru.

  25. levy: "I mean he was more lucky than some of these guys" 😂

  26. Anand should NOT be there… I've been reading a lot of biased opinions based on ethnicity… He's just Hikaru's favorite.

  27. levy looking like hes trying to hold in a shit

  28. Anand in chat "I am watching" Hikaru – not noticing

  29. How is Hikaru putting himself in the same category as Magnus? @38:10

  30. Alekhine actually went on the wagon to take the title back from Euwe – after losing it due to some "spectacular collisions with the vodka bottle". Such determination! A nasty piece of work though – during the war he authored a piece of pseudo-scientific pro-Nazi nonsense claiming that attacking tactical chess was Aryan and superior, whereas positional chess was Jewish and, of course, inferior. Not a nice man.

  31. Rewatching these old Levy and Hikaru videos. They were all so good, hope they do stuff again someday.
I was so happy Hikaru rated Anand so highly, that guy is really something else. Even now he's still playing at the top level, in his 50s! He's something else in every way.

  32. I thought it Said terrorist instead of theorist and that you guys were gonna put the middle easterns in the tier

  33. Levy doesn't recognize Alekhine? Really? Or trolling? Wow
